New Zealand South Island ~ Part 1

January 28th 2005
We're on Vacation! You might ask, "Aren't you are always on vacation? How can this be?" Well, it's hard to explain, but we have been living on Freebird for almost 3 years. This is going to be something different. We have converted our little van into a play mobile. We have loaded it with: cameras, watercolors, a surfboard, a kayak, snorkeling equipment, etc.

It's pouring rain. Muted green fields dotted with soggy sheep around every bend in the road. We are headed back North toward home. New Zealand to Fiji

After almost six months of land based activities we are under sail again. We are anchored in the protected bay of Great Barrier Island. The last month has been hectic. We have installed a new refrigeration system, hauled the boat out for maintenance and bottom paint, repaired our broken transmission, and countless other tasks.

Thursday September 8, 2005 After island hopping for 3 days we arrived in Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu, the second largest island in Fiji. It's much more laid back and less touristy than the Mamanuthas. Savusavu is a small waterfront town. It used to be a center for copra (coconut) export. Tuvalu, Onotoa

October 11, 2005 After an easy 3 day sail from Fawn Harbor, Vanua Levu, Fiji, we arrive in Funafuti, the capital of Tuvalu. Our friends Dana and Mike on Camira were already in the harbor. Kiribati

Saturday November 12, 2005 Tarawa is another population center. It's the capital of Kiribati, the northern Island republic of the Gilbert group. It was the site of a major battle in WWII. There are reminders of the war everywhere. The Island is covered with Japanese guns and structures. Many US marines and Sailors lost there lives here.

Marshall Islands ~

We sailed into Majuro, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This atoll has stores with real American products like Hagen Daas ice cream, a US post office, and even hamburgers.
